Chamundeshwari Temple
The Chamundi Hills, 12 kilometers from Mysuru, is home to the Goddess Chamundeshwari, the Mysuru Royal Family's patron deity. The 17th-century Chamundeshwari temple, designed in the Dravidian style, features a large Mahishasura statue near the entrance and a lavishly adorned image of the deity. On the hilltop is also a Mahabaleshwara Temple from the Ganga period. On this hill, the Goddess is said to have defeated the demon king Mahishasura. You can also see the monolithic Nandi, one of the largest in the country, halfway up the hill. The Chamundeshwari temple, which is said to be more than 1,000 years old and features Goddess Durga, was supported by all rulers, including the Hoysalas, Vijayanagara Empire, and Mysuru Wodeyars. The sanctuary tower (Raja Gopura) was added by Krishna Raja Wodeyar III in 1830.
